Newry City U-18s Meet the Players: Ryan Gourley

Recently, Newry Times caught up with the upcoming U-18 talent Ryan Gourley to find out a little more about him:

Name: Ryan Gourley.

Age: 17.

Position: Right/left wing.

Previous clubs: Banbridge Town, Seapatrick.

Greatest achievement so far in your career? Representing my school in the NI Cup semi final in Windsor Park and recently playing for the  Newry Reserves in the Wilmor Johnson Memorial Cup final. Despite the result it was a great experience.

Best player you have played against? Josh Barton who is playing for Aston Villa youth team and reserves.

Best ground you have played in? Windsor Park.

Who is your sporting hero? I can’t decide between Lionel Messi and Steven Gerrard. Their attitude, skill and passion is inspiring.

If you were to throw a party, which celebrities or sports people would you ask around? Eminem, Simon Cowell and Steven Gerrard for the manly banter and Rihanna and Cheryl Cole for something nice to look at.

What club would you like to play for in the future? Barcelona. Best team in the world, (in my dreams). I’d love to play for the Newry first team in the Premiership.

What is one thing that you enjoy while playing football? The buzz of winning.

What inspires you to play football? To try and make something of myself some day and win plenty of leagues and cups with my team.

What is your least favourite training drill? 300 m runs.

Who has been the biggest influence in your career so far? The commitment and support my family has given me has influenced me. My dad never misses a game and he has such a great knowledge of football.

What brought you to play for Newry? Ryan McConville coached me at Banbridge Town and is a terrific coach but the biggest factor was Gary Redpath who has always shown a lot of faith in me.

Who is the biggest joker in the team? Definitely Lenny (Connor Lenaghan).

Which team mate has the biggest bag of toiletries? Jamie Edgar.

Who is the best trainer at the club? Jordan King.

Who is the best/worst dresser in the team? Best dresser has to be me. Worst is that lad Brendan D’Arcy. Don’t know if he owns a mirror.

Who has the best taste in music in the team? Jake Redpath. He is big into Eminem these days and I’m a huge fan.

And finally…What’s your favourite thing about playing for Newry? The players here are at a great standard and I have really enjoyed making new friends here. The banter is huge!
