Grants of up to £1500 available as electric cars come to Newry

By Mark McGahon

The last two weeks has witnessed the setting up of new chargers across Newry for electric cars. And there is no shortage of the charge-points either; they can be found from one side of Newry to the other. Locations for the chargers include the Fiveways Filling Station, Newry Train Station and Bagnel’s Castle. But they may be found at the side of some streets also such as Hill St and Monaghan St and in the Basin Walk Car Park, Canal Court Hotel Car Park and Bridge St car park.

While over 40 chargers have recently been installed across Northern Ireland, the BBC has reported that it is expected a further 100 will be installed before the end of 2013. The BBC also predicts that there is to be an added incentive for people in Northern Ireland to buy electric cars as Stormont ministers are to announce a £1,500 grant for the first 300 people to buy an electric car.

This grant will be aimed at covering the cost of installing electric charging points at the customer’s own home and would almost certainly help entice people to invest in what Stormont hope will be a step toward cutting the North’s carbon emissions and a more cost-effective method of transport in the long-term.
