SDLP Sports spokesperson Karen McKevitt MLA welcomed news that  the Cuban Olympic boxing team will come to Northern Ireland for their pre-games training.

She said: “This is not just a top team, in fact by many measures it is the top boxing team of all with 40 gold medals to its credit. Hosting them will be an inspiration for everyone in the sport across Ireland and will no doubt raise our standards and levels of achievement. It might also inspire local authorities to invest more in sporting infrastructure when they see the quality of sports people we can attract under the right circumstances.

She added, “On the longer term it is one small indication of the great economic potential of sporting tourism.”
