Brady: ‘Suicide Prevention must be given priority’

Sinn Fein MLA Mickey Brady has called for awareness to be raised on the issue of suicide following the tragic death of another young man in Newry last week.

Speaking to Newry Times, Mr Brady said, “I would firstly like to express my condolences to the family and friends of Liam Boyle who sadly died last week. The spectre of suicide looms large over our community with scarcely a week going by without another family being affected.”

Brady continued, “Statistics show that young men are at most risk and this is something that needs to be urgently addressed with an all Ireland Suicide Prevention Strategy. Funding to groups such as PIPS which raise awareness of suicide and provide practical workshops on positive mental health should be more readily available.”

“I recently met with the local Newry PIPS team and saw at first hand the crucial role played by them in helping bereaved families at a time of sadness and despair. More research into the causes of suicide and appropriate preventative measures is urgently needed if this epidemic is to be stopped,” he added.
