Newry Times Picture Special: Gorse fires out of control

Parts of Newry and Mourne are engulfed tonight in thick black smoke after gorse fires continued to rage on the outskirts of the city at Camlough Mountain. The mountain, which experienced an incredible blaze last year, experienced a fire at around 2pm earlier today which was tackled by approximately 40 fire fighters. Fire crews are at the scene fighting to extinguish the blaze.

Lloyd Crawford, Group Commander from the Fire and Rescue Service said: “We have gorse which is about waist high and we have a range of forestry trees which are some 20ft to 30ft high. The fire is moving through the gorse and trees very rapidly which has caused extreme difficulties for firefighters trying to access the fire and control it.”

Newry Times readers have been sending their pictures to Newry Times from every corner of Newry & Mourne. Posted below are the incredible pictures taken by local photographer Anthony Cranney.
