Police charge 21 year old with Newry rape

Detectives from the PSNI’s Rape Crime Unit have charged a 21 year old man with rape. He is due to appear at Newry Magistrate’s Court tomorrow (Thursday 22nd March). As is normal procedure the charge will be reviewed by the Public Prosecution Service. The charges relate to reports of a rape in Newry City Centre on 11th December 2011.

The rape allegedly occurred in the Sugar Island area of the city

At approximately 1.30am on the night in question, a 23 year old female accepted a lift from two males in a dark coloured, four door car at Sugar Island. It is believed the car drove around Newry for approximately one hour through Sugar island around the one way system stopping on Talbot Street and Stream Street and ending up in the North Street/Lindsay Walk area. The female was sexually assaulted during this time.
