Down boss McCartan praises Down’s determination

Down boss James McCartan has this week praised his Down side following their fantastic victory over All Ireland Champions Dublin on Sunday. McCartan spoke of the determination to fight for every ball in every minute of the game, “The guys played for the whole 70 minutes. In the past, we’ve played in parts of games – but when we were under pressure we still had that attacking threat and we were able to keep the scoreboard moving.”

He continued, “Whenever they got their goal, the heads didn’t go down. We asked them to look each other in the eye and respond, and we did that. We didn’t become a defensive unit either. I know at times you’ll have men behind the ball. That’s going to happen in every game and certainly with a minute or two left I was calling for Benny Coulter to come off the edge of the square and go down to the other square.”

McCartan also mentioned how the Kerry game gave his side heart, “We got a lot of criticism after the Kerry game. I didn’t see it that way. After 15 or 20 minutes of that game we should have been five or six points up. So we took a bit of heart from that.”
