Public warned to secure their premises

Crime prevention officers in E District are reminding householders to take steps to secure their sheds and garden equipment as Spring begins.

Paula Nicholl, Crime Prevention Officer for Armagh and Newry, explained, “Securing your shed is vital – don’t let burglars use your tools to break in. Ensure that doors are solid enough not to be kicked in and fit strong closed shackle padlocks. Never leave a garage or garden shed unlocked, especially if it has a connecting door to the house – a thief could get in and work on the inner door in privacy.”

“Householders should also permanently mark their belongings and keep a record of what they have stored in their shed. UV pens can be used to invisibly mark your property. Garden crime can also be a concern as the days get longer and weather improves.”

Nicholl continued, “Effective garden security includes: protecting vulnerable areas such as windows, fences, boundary walls and drainpipes; well positioned external lighting which will help to keep intruders away; and maintaining your shed in good condition. To make your shed secure ensure that meshes or grilles are fitted to the windows and invest in an alarm.”

“Make sure that large items such as bicycles are chained together. It is much more difficult for a thief to carry away a lot of large heavy items. Ladders should be locked to a secure fixture in the shed or garage so they cannot be used to access upstairs windows. Valuables should be marked with your postcode and check that your household insurance policy covers garden or shed equipment and find out if any minimum security standards apply,” she added.
