McKevitt: ‘Warrenpoint PSNI Station still an open question’

Warrenpoint Police Station is one of a number of stations facing possible closure

SDLP South Down MLA Karen McKevitt said there are no indications of public support for a possible closure of Warrenpoint police station. After attending a local meeting of the District Policing Partnership on the issue she said: “I attended as an observer because I have other avenues to make my opinions known and I just wanted to listen to local people. There was a good local attendance, a good debate and a good presentation from the PSNI. But there was no indication that there is support in Warrenpoint for closure.

McKevitt continued, “There was agreement that policing has come a long way in the town with the Neighbourhood Policing Team, Neighbourhood Watch and so on. But there is quite a strong feeling that since the people of Warrenpoint have opened their doors to the PSNI, this is not the time for the police to be closing their doors.”

“There is still time for the views of a wider public to be heard. The consultation runs to 12th March and my constituency office is happy to provide the necessary leaflet and form,” the SDLP MLA added.
