Public urged to be vigilant over bogus charity scam

Police in Newry are warning residents to be vigilant of bogus charity collectors. The warning comes following an incident in the Lisdrum Avenue area on Saturday 18th February. A young female called to a house with a sponsor sheet, collecting for a homeless charity. The occupant took the sheet inside to write down her name. When she returned to the door the girl had left. The occupant then inspected the sponsor form and found the only contact for the charity was Homeless Support at a Hotmail address.

Checks have revealed no such charity and this is believed to have been a scam. Police are reminding householders to check the ID and documentation of anyone calling to your door requesting donations/sponsorship. Genuine callers will not mind their identity being checked.

If you are uncomfortable with a caller to your door ask for contact details of their organisation and ask them to call back later when you have verified their identity with their organisation.

Anyone who believes they have been a victim of this scam or who has concerns can contact their local police on 0845 600 8000.
