Premier division

Action from the Parkview and North End Strollers game.

Windmill Stars inflicted Bessbrook United’s first defeat of the season in a one sided second half at Orior Park. Scoring opportunities were few and far between in the first half. Niall Devlin came close to breaking the deadlock for Windmill but for a timely interception from Mark Patton. Declan Carville also forced a good save from the Windmill goalkeeper, Kevin Murray. These were the highlights of a drab first half dominated by the driving wind and heavy showers.

Windmill made use of the wind advantage in the second half. Their forward line of Kevin O’Rourke and Niall Devlin began to cause havoc in the Bessbrook defence. Five minutes into the second half Windmill won a corner. The ball was played into Niall Devlin to finish from close range and give Windmill the lead. Two minutes later, a great move from Windmill, followed by a terrific strike from Kevin O’Rourke forced a great save from Peter Murphy in the Bessbrook goal. Windmill were not to be denied though. Kevin O’Rouke made a darting run down the right wing and crossed to Jimmy Russell to give Windmill a two goal cushion. Niall Devlin then finished the game with a clever lob over the advancing Murphy to get his second and Windmill’s third and final goal.

Finn Harps threw away a two goal lead at Killeavy. After a goalless first half, the Harps scored two goals early in the second half through John Craven and Gavin Grimes. Things got worse for Killeavy when they were reduced to ten men in the second half. This seemed to spur them on though and they scored soon after the sending off. Finn Harps couldn’t take advantage of their extra man and were made to pay for this when Killeavy equalised in the last minute of the game.

Gavin Thornton of Parkview chases two North End Strollers players.

Kilkeel leapfrogged Woodside in the table after a 2-0 victory over the Bessbrook side.  Redmond Cunningham gave Kilkeel the lead on the half hour mark and Aidan O’Hanlon got their second ten minutes into the second half to seal the three points.

Rockview United were back on form against Ballybot after their poor showing against Kilkeel the previous week. Robbie White got the first goal after he got on the end of Sean McCabe’s cross. Joe McLaughlin got the second goal after a fine passing  move from midfield to give them a 2-0 win.

Crieve Rovers are still without a a league win after Damolly beat them 2-1 in a battle of the bottom two sides in the division. Chris Hughes got Damolly’s first goal with a fine strike from 20 yards out. Jason Niblock then scored to give Damolly a 2-0 half time lead. Crieve never gave up though and they scored late on but Damolly held on for a big three points to edge them a step closer towards safety in the league table.

First division

North End Strollers remain three points behind top side Whitecross in Division One. Conor Carlin’s two second half goals helped give them a comfortable 3-0 win over Parkview at Jennings Park.

Tempers flare between Crieve Rovers and Damolly.

Whitecross continued their hot goal scoring streak against Bohemians at Jimmy Steen Park. Kieran O’Brien scored a contender for goal of the season with a great strike from 60 yards out. Cathal McSherry (2), Darren Shields and Niall Boyle completed the scoring. The scoring could have been much higher only for some fine saves from Sean O’Hanlon in the Boh’s nets.

Rostrevor Rovers remain four points ahead of Villa Rovers after the two sides played out a 1-1 draw at Kilbroney. Jarlath Quinn scored direct from a corner kick early on for Villa on but Jonny Murchan gave Rostrevor a share of the spoils with a sweetly struck free kick.

Midway are still in the race for promotion and if they win their games in hand will be right on the tails of the leaders. They had a 4-1 win over Newry Juventus at Frank Curran Park on Saturday. With the score at 2-1 in the second half the Juventus ‘keeper got injured and had to be taken off. Unfortunately, they had used all of their subs so had to play the remainder of the game with ten men. Midway took full advantage of this and put the game to bed with two late goals. Seamus Hillen scored a hat-rick for the Meadow side and Rowan Kearns scored Juve’s only goal.
