Sham marriage suspects sentenced

The four people who attempted to cheat immigration rules by arranging a fake marriage in Newry last year were sentenced in Newry Crown Court, Thursday 12th January .

The fake marriage, which was to be between Jaspreet Singh, a 24-year-old Indian student living in Dublin, and 24-year-old Latvian woman Irina Kudinoiva, was prevented just before the marriage ceremony began, which was taking place in the Registers Office in September last year.

Kudinova received an 11 month sentence suspended for three years and fined £1,000, while Singh – who was illegally in the UK – was sentenced to 11 months suspended for three years and fined £2,000.

Jarmal Singh Minhas and Karamjit Singh, both 33 and living in Dublin, who were acting as witnesses to the false marriage were also charged in relation to the incident.  Both received eleven month sentences suspended for three years and fined £2000 each.
