Roads closed as Newry gets hit by strong winds

The Met Office has today issued a weather warning for Northern Ireland as winds of up to 90mph are expected to hit throughout today.  Disruptions have been caused throughout the province with roads being blocked by fallen debris, power outages and some public transport also being effected. Police are also advising motorists to take care when driving and to expect debris on the roads.

Several roads in Newry and Mourne were already disrupted this morning as the strong winds battered the region. The following roads were closed at around 8am:

  • Fathom Line, Newry – Re-opened as of 8:25am
  • Cregganduff Road, Cullyhanna
  • Derrymore Road, Bessbrook – Closed due to 2 fallen trees.
  • Rathfriland Road, Newry was partially disrupted.
The Met Office has said it’s weather warning is currently valid until 6pm this evening, when winds in the area are expected to die down.
