Newry rape suspects released unconditionally

Two males arrested in relation to a serious sexual assault in the Sugar Island area of Newry on Sunday 11th December, who were previously released on bail, have been released unconditionally. Detectives from the PSNI’s Rape Crime Unit are still appealing for information following the assault. Around 1.30am last Sunday a 23 year old female accepted a lift from two males in a dark coloured, four door car at Sugar Island.

It is believed the car drove around Newry for approximately one hour through Sugar island around the one way system stopping on Talbot Street and Stream Street and ending up in the North Street/Lindsay Walk area. The female was sexually assaulted during this time.

Police are working to establish the exact details of this incident and are asking anyone who witnessed a dark coloured car driving around these areas during these times to contact them immediately. They would also like to hear from anyone who has any other information in relation to this incident. Detectives at the Rape Crime Unit can be contacted on 0845 600 8000. If you prefer to provide information without giving your details you can contact the independent Crimestoppers charity anonymously on 0800 555 111.
