Seconds Out: A Tale of Two Counties

On Friday night at the Forester’s Hall, Newry the Sacred Heart Boxing Club organised a great show of boxing. The “Tale of Two Counties” ended with victory for Down as they defeated Dublin 8 – 6 on a great night of boxing which took the curtain down on the 2011 season.

There were many rip roaring contests on the night, none better than the Stephen Mulholland (St Malachy’s) v Bernaldo Marime (Clonoe) toe to toe contest, with Stephen coming out on top by a point margin but either man could have emerged victorious with both boxers not deserving to lose. Sacred Heart had only one loss on the night with Sean Garvey only losing out by a count-back decision although Conor Wallace, Robert McGreevy, Jordan Chambers and Patrick Lennon of Sacred Heart all emerged victorious with great performances against tough Dublin opponents. Other winners on the night for the Down team were Allan White (St Brigids), Conor Martin (Banbridge), Michael McGarry (St Bronagh’s).

Coaches Owen Murphy and Seamus McCormack were delighted with the standard on show. Speaking to Newry Times Owen Murphy said, “There doesn’t be many tournaments like this one with so many champions on show and it was great to see so many quality, close fights. We would like to thank the Dublin Team for making the trip up and hopefully we can return the favour in the new year.”
