Benefit fraudsters sentenced at Newry Magistrates Court

Benefit fraudsters across Northern Ireland risk a hefty fine or even a jail sentence after two people were convicted at Newry Magistrates’ Court on Monday for claiming benefits they were not entitled to. Gary Thompson from Gilford recieved a three-month prison sentence suspended for two years. The 41 year old was charged with wrongful encashment of Jobseekers Allowance and Income Support coming to a total of £381. He will also have to repay the money to the Social Security Agency.

Brian Hale (41) from Banbridge claimed Disability Living Allowance totalling £2,339 while exaggerating his disability. He was given 240 hours community service and has repaid the money in full.
