Newry continued their great form of late with a convincing 2-0 win at home to Limavady United on Friday 2nd December. Newry started the game strongly in what was a very wet evening at Newry Showgrounds. The first chance fell to Newry, when captain Darren King cut in from the wing, given time and space he was allowed to get into the box where he could only rattle the crossbar from a fierce shot.

The opening goal of the game came in the 22nd minute when Darren Freeman played the ball between the Roesiders central defenders, and Newry striker Darragh Hanaphy was first to react to the hesitance of Lims keeper McCormack. The Newry danger man coolly slotted the ball past the rooted keeper much to the joy of the home fans.

United battled back and had their fair share of chances. Their best chance of the half came on the half hour mark when they managed to get into a one on one position only for Ruairi Devlin to get back and get a foot to the ball. However the Limavady striker still managed to get the ball through the legs of City keeper Gareth Buchannan, just as the ball was about to trickle across the line, in slid Stephen Hutchinson to clear off the line only to then get injured while doing so as he slid into the goal posts, much like Phil Babb did against Chelsea all those years ago.

The sides went in at half time with Newry a goal to the good, but it wasn’t long until Limavady were a man down as well as a goal down. United forward Cathair Friel was was shown a straight red and dismissed on the hour mark for dissent. This gave Newry a further advantage in the match as they began to turn the screw. The second goal came after 65 minutes as a delightful corner was chipped in by James Hand and was finished well by Paul Donegan, to grab his first goal of the season.

Newry were unlucky not to make it three, minutes later when Timmy Grant turned in the box and was only denied by the upright. The ball fell loose and Stephen Hutchinson could only play the ball off a defender for a corner.

The two nil victory is a third straight for Newry in the league as they pile the pressure on league leaders Ballinamallard, who play their game in hand against Loughgall tomorrow.  With the gap down to just two points The Ducks will have to respond well to tonights result. Newry now take a break from league action as they travel to Sport & Leisure Swifts on Saturday 10th December, and the Newry City Travel Club will be running a bus to the game, which will leave from the Stone Bridge at 12pm sharp for the 1.30pm kick-off.

Newry Starting XI: Gareth Buchanan, Darren King, Paul Carvill (Stephen McCabe), Stephen Hutchinson, Paul Donegan, Darren Freeman (Don Tierney), Brian Mallon,  James Hand, Darragh Hanaphy, Timmy Grant (Stephen Hughes), Ruairi Devlin.

Subs: Don Tierney, Stephen Hughes, Stephen McCabe, Marty Havern, Ricky Copeland
