Laura left Newry for Liverpool

Name: Laura Toal

Age: 24

Masters in Social Work Liverpool John Moores University. BA Hons Sociology from Queens University Belfast.  A Levels and GCSEs and i’m currently working as a Social Worker in Liverpool.

What part of Newry & Mourne are you originally from?

Upper Damolly Road (Rathfriland Road)

When did you leave Newry?

I left Newry September 2008 to go to Liverpool but prior to this I was a student and lived in Belfast from 2005-2008 although I did come home to Newry every weekend to work.

Why did you leave Newry?

I left Newry to further my education as in the North of Ireland the two year social work course is not classed as a Masters and it was to do something different, I did Belfast and suppose Liverpool was a new adventure.

Who did you go with?

I went with a girl who I met during my BA degree in Queens, from Tyrone.

What are you doing now? Are you working?

I am working as a Social Worker in Liverpool, been working the past 18 months and I am also making sure that O’Neills keeps in business at the weekends.

Are you enjoying life away from Newry?

Yes I love life in Liverpool, although it’s not a permanent move! Newry is my home.

What do you miss most about Newry?

I miss my family, the nieces (loads), friends (TMG) and just the people in general.

When will you return to Newry?

I would like to return to Newry in the next two years, once I get more experience but I could only come back if I had a job and to get a job I would probably have to look outside Newry anyway or maybe do some travelling before I make that move back to Newry.

Career ambition (i.e. your perfect job):

My career ambition is to succeed within a social work role and my perfect job would definitely be social work job back at home!

What would you say to anybody still living in Newry who can’t find work?

Spread the wings, Newry will always be there but there is so much more opportunities out there outside the borders of Newry! Also, it looks good on the CV that you’ve worked away from home!

Anything else you would like to add?

Newry will always be home!!!
