Neighbourhood police officers in Newry are asking local residents to help them tackle burglary and theft in the run up to Christmas. Officers met recently with neighbourhood watch co-ordinators to discuss issues in their area and what steps can be taken to address these. E District’s crime prevention officers also attended and provided crime prevention advice and tips on how to protect your property. Neighbourhood officers also spoke to those present about winter road safety and their festive anti-burglary/theft strategy. Speaking to Newry Times, Neighbourhood Constable Valentine said, “Burglary is a particularly intrusive crime and we do not want anyone to become a victim, particularly in the run up to Christmas. We will conduct a number of proactive anti-burglary patrols in the weeks running up to Christmas in an effort to detect and deter criminals but we also want all householders to take steps to protect their own property.”

He continued, “Householders should always ensure their properties and vehicles are properly secured and keep an eye on your neighbour’s property. If you do witness any type of suspicious activity contact us immediately. We would rather check out a report of suspicious activity than miss the opportunity to stop a burglary. I would also encourage anyone who is interested in becoming involved in a neighbourhood watch scheme or who would simply like further advice on protecting their property to contact the neighbourhood team in Newry. We can also attend local group meetings to discuss concerns and advise on crime prevention. Anyone who is interested can contact us by phoning 0845 600 8000

and asking for Newry Neighbourhood Team.”
