It was announced today that the Mayor of Newry and Mourne District Council, Councillor Charlie Casey, has nominated Ryan Cinnamond as one of its two nominations to carry the Olympic Torch upon its arrival to Newry on 5th June 2012.

Both the Mayor and District Council feel that Ryan meets all the necessary criteria as a Torch Bearer in that he has been an inspiration to all young people in the way he has coped with life since his tragic illness. The organizing committee were particularly seeking nominations for young people and Mayor Casey had no hesitation in putting Ryan’s name forward.

The nomination was announced and was then followed by a  photo call at St. Colman’s College where there is a major capital development to provide sporting facilities, which will be used in partnership with the College pupils and the local community.Newry and Mourne District Council said they were pleased to be associated with this project and are working in partnership with other funding agencies to bring the project to fruition.

Regarding the  selection of Ryan for the honour of Torch Bearer, Mayor Casey stated: “The choice of Ryan Cinnamond as a nominee for the role of Torch Bearer will certainly highlight to his peers that even in face of adversity sport still remains one of his greatest passions and if chosen he will be a great ambassador for the Newry and Mourne area”.
