The Quays set for expansion
The Quays Shopping Centre is set for a multi-million pound development that will create 500 jobs in the local area.
The project, set to cost £35 million, will create 150,000 square foot of new retail and restaurant space while also creating 600 new parking spaces in the complex. Although the plans are subject to approval, it is expected that this approval will be granted and construction can begin in 2012.
Developers are expecting approximately 200 construction jobs to be created during the build and 300 retail and associated jobs afterwards.
Dr Gerard O’Hare, owner of The Quays, said: “I am delighted that the application is to be recommended for approval by the Department. This will allow The Quays to offer a further new and exciting phase to its customers.
“Of course it will remain difficult to deliver these plans in current market conditions and impossible without certainty of demand but I am delighted to announce that with half of the space already reserved we have very good reason to be optimistic”.
The development will be situated within the current Quays complex on the site of the old petrol station and some space in the current car park.
The new development will also be connected to the mall in the Quays with a glass bridge. With construction starting in 2012, the development is expected to reach completion in 2013.
